Synopsis

When Sydney discovers that her boyfriend has been cheating on her with her roommate, she ends up relying on Ridge — her next-door neighbor, a gifted guitarist who is deaf and experiences music through vibration. Their creative collaboration on lyrics becomes something neither can categorize, complicated by the fact that Ridge is already in a committed relationship. The novel was accompanied by a companion album co-written by Hoover and musician Griffin Peterson, with each song tied to a specific chapter — making it one of the few romance novels with its own original soundtrack. First in the three-book Maybe Someday series.

About the author

Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover was born on December 11, 1979, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and grew up in nearby Saltillo. She earned a degree in social work from Texas A&M University–Commerce in 2004 and worked in social work, latterly as a counselor for the federal WIC nutrition program. She began her first novel, Slammed, on a borrowed laptop in 2011, originally intending it as a Christmas gift for her mother, and self-published it in 2012; its word-of-mouth success led to a publishing deal with Atria Books....

Frequently asked questions

  • Is there a soundtrack for this book?

The book features an original musical collaboration with musician Griffin Peterson, who composed songs specifically to accompany the narrative.

  • How does this book fit into the series?

This title serves as the first installment in a three-part series, followed by a companion story and a concluding volume that provides further resolution for the characters.

  • How does the novel portray Ridge's deafness?

Ridge experiences music through vibration and emotional context rather than sound. His deafness is treated as a characteristic rather than a limitation — he is a skilled musician whose experience of music differs from a hearing person's. Hoover researched this aspect of the book.

  • What is the companion album and how does it connect to the book?

Hoover collaborated with Australian musician Griffin Peterson to write and record an original album, with each song corresponding to a chapter. The album was released alongside the novel and is available for streaming, making Maybe Someday one of the few romance novels with its own purpose-built soundtrack.

  • Is the situation between Sydney and Ridge a standard love triangle?

The situation is more ethically complex. Ridge is in a committed relationship with someone he genuinely loves, and the novel takes this seriously rather than dismissing the existing relationship as an obstacle. The moral weight of that complication is central to what makes the book work.

  • Who is Warren and does he have his own story?

Warren is Ridge's roommate — an outspoken, comedic character who provides contrast to the novel's heavier emotional content. Reader demand led Hoover to write the companion novella Maybe Not, which gives Warren his own love story with a character named Bridgette.

  • Is the Maybe Someday series complete?

Yes — the three-book series (Maybe Someday, Maybe Not, Maybe Now) is complete. Maybe Now is the direct sequel to Maybe Someday and provides a full resolution for the main characters.

  • What makes Maybe Someday unusual in contemporary romance?

Most contemporary romance novels do not have original soundtracks. The collaboration between Hoover and Griffin Peterson to write real songs for each chapter creates a layered reading experience. The deaf musician protagonist is also uncommon in the genre.

  • Is Maybe Someday appropriate for readers sensitive to infidelity themes?

The novel's central complication involves an emotional connection developing while Ridge is in an existing committed relationship. This is not resolved quickly and is treated seriously throughout. Readers strongly averse to emotional-infidelity storylines should be aware this is the central conflict.
