Synopsis

A novella companion to Maybe Someday, Maybe Not follows Warren — Ridge's quick-witted roommate — and Bridgette, an abrasive and self-sufficient woman who moves into the apartment and immediately antagonizes him. The two clash at every turn, their mutual irritation escalating until it becomes impossible to ignore what the fighting is actually covering up. Shorter and considerably funnier than Maybe Someday, it offers an enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy counterpoint to the main novel's heavier emotional weight. Best read after Maybe Someday, as both characters are introduced there.

Colleen Hoover was born on December 11, 1979, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and grew up in nearby Saltillo. She earned a degree in social work from Texas A&M University–Commerce in 2004 and worked in social work, latterly as a counselor for the federal WIC nutrition program. She began her first novel, Slammed, on a borrowed laptop in 2011, originally intending it as a Christmas gift for her mother, and self-published it in 2012; its word-of-mouth success led to a publishing deal with Atria Books....

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to read Maybe Someday before Maybe Not?

Yes — Warren and Bridgette are introduced as secondary characters in Maybe Someday, and the novella assumes readers already know them and the apartment setting. It also spoils elements of the main novel's plot. Reading Maybe Someday first is required.

  • Who is Warren and why does he have his own novella?

Warren is Ridge's roommate in Maybe Someday — an outspoken, comedic figure who provides contrast to the emotionally heavier main story. Reader demand for his own love story led Hoover to write Maybe Not as a companion piece that delivers the relationship his character seemed to be pointing toward.

  • What is the tone of Maybe Not compared to Maybe Someday?

Noticeably lighter and funnier. Maybe Someday deals with serious themes around disability, loyalty, and deception; Maybe Not is an enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy. The shift in tone is deliberate and provides emotional counterbalance within the same fictional world.

  • Is Bridgette a character from Maybe Someday?

Yes — she is introduced in Maybe Someday as a peripheral figure whose dynamic with Warren is established but not explored. Maybe Not gives her substantially more page time and access to her interior perspective.

  • Is the Maybe Someday series complete?

Yes — the three-book series consists of Maybe Someday, Maybe Not, and Maybe Now. All three are published and the series is complete.

  • How long is Maybe Not?

It is a novella of approximately 150 pages — roughly half the length of Maybe Someday. Hoover has noted it was written specifically as companion content rather than as a main-series entry, and it is positioned at #1.5 in the series reading order.
