Factory Summers
For three summers, starting at age 16, cartoonist Guy Delisle worked in a noisy pulp and paper factory. This graphic memoir chronicles his twelve-hour shifts and the daily rhythms of mill life, offering an outsider's perspective on the all-male environment. Delisle observes workplace politics, class tensions, and toxic masculinity, leading him to question his father's unhappiness and seek refuge in art. He rediscovers comics and prepares for animation school, determined to pursue a fulfilling career despite initial warnings about job prospects.
