While this story functions as a standalone narrative, it features a long-running protagonist whose personal history and professional evolution are developed across many prior books. New readers can follow the plot without difficulty, though they may miss the context of established relationships and character arcs that have accumulated over the series.
This installment includes cameo appearances from characters originating in the Virgil Flowers and Kidd series, which share the same fictional universe. These interconnections reward long-time readers of the author's broader body of work.
