Synopsis

With the Valg threat mounting and her kingdom of Terrasen weakened by years of Adarlan's occupation, Aelin Galathynius moves across the continent gathering allies and securing the resources she needs for the war ahead. Her crew — Rowan, Aedion, Lysandra, Elide, and Lorcan — navigates treacherous coastlines, pirate politics, and a Fae queen whose agenda crosses Aelin's own. Meanwhile, Manon Blackbeak confronts the full horror of what the Ironteeth covens have been used to do, and begins to make choices that will pull her from the orbit of her obedience. Empire of Storms is the largest in scope of any Throne of Glass book prior to Kingdom of Ash, sprawling across geography and character arcs while steadily closing off the narrative space available before the war. Its ending is one of the series's most devastating sequences — a full-scale assault on characters the reader has spent five books learning to love, culminating in a sacrifice whose weight will carry through the final book.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does Empire of Storms end on a cliffhanger?

This installment concludes with significant unresolved plotlines and character fates, leaving many major questions open for the next book in the series.

  • Is it necessary to read the previous books before Empire of Storms?

Empire of Storms is deeply embedded in an ongoing narrative, building directly on character arcs and world-building established in earlier volumes. Reading the preceding books is essential for understanding the plot and character motivations.

  • What happens at the end of Empire of Storms?
  • Should Empire of Storms be read before or alongside Tower of Dawn?

Maas has suggested alternating chapters between Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn, as both books take place during the same time period. Reading them in publication order also works — Empire of Storms first, then Tower of Dawn, then Kingdom of Ash — though the simultaneous timeline means some plot knowledge from one informs the other.

  • Who is Lysandra, and what is her power?

Lysandra is a shape-shifter who can take the form of any creature she has studied. She was introduced in Queen of Shadows as a courtesan and Aelin's ally; her full power range becomes clear in Empire of Storms, where she uses it in ways that are both tactically significant and emotionally costly.

  • Is Rolfe, the Pirate Lord, in this book?

Yes — Skull's Bay and Rolfe return in Empire of Storms, making this the main series payoff for the setting introduced in The Assassin and the Pirate Lord novella. Rolfe's cooperation is one of the alliances Aelin needs, and the meaning of the tattoo on his hands is elaborated here.

  • Does the romantic arc between Aelin and Rowan advance in this book?

Yes, significantly. Their relationship reaches full acknowledgement in Empire of Storms, including a formal bond that carries consequences for both of them. The book is also notably more sexually explicit than its predecessors, though it remains within the YA spectrum — more explicit than early Throne of Glass books but not comparable to the adult content of later ACOTAR books.
