Synopsis

With her betrothal imminent, the beautiful Princess Ava has gone missing — fleeing a match with a man who is powerful, well-connected and cruel. Gwen has spent years hunting wanted criminals and collecting bounties to provide for her mother and brother since her father died, and the promise of an armful of gold for bringing the princess home is too good to ignore. She finds Ava. That turns out to be the easy part.

Bringing the princess home doesn't solve anyone's problems. Gwen still has a family to feed, Ava still has a wretched marriage to look forward to, and on the road back the two of them strike on an arrangement neither expects to survive contact with the court: a fake engagement of their own.

What follows is part road-and-castle fantasy and part slow-burn sapphic romance, with Ava's talent for politics — she is genuinely good at it, and enjoys being good at it — doing as much work as Gwen's sword. And in the background, a prophecy, and dragons that are beginning to fly again.
