Synopsis

In a future Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each devoted to a single virtue — Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. At sixteen, every citizen must choose the faction to which they will belong for the rest of their lives. Beatrice Prior, raised in selfless Abnegation, hides a secret revealed by her aptitude test: she is Divergent, someone who fits no single faction — and in this rigid world, that difference is dangerous.

Renaming herself Tris, she leaves her family to join the fearless Dauntless and throws herself into a brutal, competitive initiation of fights, tests, and dares. As she struggles to prove herself and grows close to a guarded instructor known only as Four, Tris begins to uncover a growing conflict between the factions — one that will force her to confront who she really is and what she is willing to risk.

Veronica Roth's debut is a fast-paced young-adult dystopia about identity, fear, and choice, and the opening of a trilogy that became a global phenomenon.
