Synopsis

Centurion is the eighth novel in Simon Scarrow's Eagles of the Empire series, first published in 2008. Set in AD 46, it finds Centurion Quintus Licinius Cato promoted to acting prefect of the Second Illyrian Cohort, with his longtime comrade Macro serving alongside him on Rome's eastern frontier.

When Parthia, one of Rome's oldest enemies, threatens to seize the border kingdom of Palmyra, Cato and Macro are sent to help defend it. The Roman presence provokes Parthia into open war, and the two officers find themselves outnumbered and deep in unfamiliar, hostile territory.

Loyal to each other and to their Emperor, Cato and Macro must hold their ground through a punishing campaign that tests their courage, their command, and the bond that has carried them through many earlier missions together.
