Synopsis

In the aftermath of World War I, two soldiers, Albert and Edouard, are forever changed by a brutal act of betrayal on the battlefield. Edouard, an artist, is left disfigured and fakes his own death, while Albert becomes his devoted caregiver. Disillusioned by a society that offers only empty platitudes to its veterans, they concoct an elaborate scam involving war memorials. Meanwhile, the ambitious lieutenant responsible for their suffering, Henry D'Aulnay-Pradelle, embarks on his own scheme, intertwining their fates in a story of human resilience, deceit, and the enduring scars of war.

Pierre Lemaitre is a French novelist and screenwriter, born in Paris on 19 April 1951. He spent most of his working life in adult education — teaching literature and general culture, and running training courses for librarians — and did not publish his first novel until 2006. He became known first for crime fiction, notably the series featuring the Paris police commandant Camille Verhœven, before turning to historical fiction.
