A Book of Common Prayer

A Book of Common Prayer is a 1977 novel by Joan Didion set in the fictional Central American country of Boca Grande. The narrative is told by Grace Strasser-Mendana, an American expatriate and amateur anthropologist and biochemist, whose life and the life of another American woman, Charlotte Douglas, become intertwined against a backdrop of political upheaval and personal loss.

Both women grapple with grief, the cost of idealism, and the ambiguity of truth in a world where certainty is rare. Didion's signature precise, detached prose gives the novel a melancholic, reflective tone as it meditates on what can and cannot be known or forgiven.
