Synopsis

Water is a 2023 novella by Irish author John Boyne and the first installment of The Elements, a planned quartet of short books — Water, Earth, Fire and Air — linked by shared characters and themes.

The story follows Vanessa Carvin, who flees to a remote island off the Irish coast and reinvents herself as Willow Hale, hoping anonymity will let her outrun her history. Narrated in her own guarded voice, the book gradually reveals the catastrophe behind her flight: her marriage to Brendan Carvin, a disgraced director of a national swimming body now in prison, and the family tragedy that followed.

Boyne uses Willow's confession to probe questions of female agency, guilt and complicity — whether choosing not to see makes a person culpable. Confronting and emotionally precise, Water established the tone for a quartet that continues in Earth, Fire and Air.
