Synopsis

Air closes out John Boyne's Elements quartet — four interlinked novellas (Water, Earth, Fire, Air) that can be read separately but gain resonance together. On his fortieth birthday, Aaron Umber boards a flight from Sydney to Dublin with his fourteen-year-old son, Emmet. Over the course of the journey, Aaron finally confronts the secrets he has kept from his son — including his own history as both a colleague and a victim of Freya, the figure at the center of the earlier books in the series.

Told from Aaron's perspective and set largely in the confined space of an airplane cabin, the novella is concerned with confession, inherited harm, and the possibility of healing — bringing threads from the earlier three books to a close.
