Synopsis

Merit Voss lives in a converted church with her deeply unconventional family — her father, his second wife (formerly his affair partner), her twin sister Honor, her younger brother, and others — and has spent years as the silent observer of everyone else's dysfunction. When events force the family's carefully maintained tensions into the open, Merit must reckon with her own role in the chaos and with the depression she has been managing alone. Without Merit uses dark humor and a family dynamic so extreme it verges on the surreal to deliver its most serious subject: invisible mental illness and the way it operates inside families that appear functional from the outside.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is unusual about the Voss family's living situation?

They live in a converted church. Merit's father married his former affair partner after leaving Merit's mother — and Merit's mother still lives in the house with them. The setup is presented as deadpan reality rather than satire, which creates sustained pressure under every interaction.

  • How does Without Merit handle the subject of depression?

Depression is portrayed as invisible and functional rather than visibly incapacitating. Merit is sarcastic, sharp, and socially present — not stereotypically depressed — and the novel argues that this is precisely why depression goes unrecognized and untreated inside families that do not believe they have problems.

  • Is Without Merit primarily a romance novel?

More than most Hoover novels, it is a family drama with a romantic subplot rather than a romance with family elements. The central conflict is Merit's relationship with her own depression and her family. Readers expecting romance-first pacing will find it slower and heavier.

  • What content warnings apply to Without Merit?

The novel contains significant depictions of depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance abuse. It also contains emotional abuse within family relationships. Hoover has described these as the most serious content warnings in her body of work.

  • Is Merit a reliable narrator?

No — and the novel makes this clear progressively. Her sharp observations about her family's hypocrisy are accurate, but her understanding of her own mental state and her role in events is significantly skewed. Recognizing the distortion in her narration is part of the novel's intended emotional impact.

  • Why does the novel use dark humor alongside such heavy subject matter?

The humor mirrors how Merit experiences her situation — the absurdity of her family's setup is the only framing that makes it survivable. The novel argues, through Merit's voice, that dark humor is not denial but a legitimate coping mechanism for people surrounded by circumstances they cannot control.

  • Is Without Merit a standalone?

Yes — complete in one volume with no sequel and no shared characters with other Hoover novels.

  • Is this book part of a series or a standalone?

This is a standalone novel and does not require reading any other books to understand the story.

  • Is the story based on real events?

The narrative is entirely fictional and not based on a true story, though the author draws on her background to explore themes of mental health and family dynamics.

  • Did this book receive any awards?

The novel won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Romance in 2017.
