Inez Olivera has spent months in Egypt chasing the truth about her parents' deaths. The search has cost her more than answers. When her uncle Tío Ricardo threatens her inheritance, she is left with one way to keep it: marry Whitford Hayes, his aide de camp and a former British soldier who was, until recently, her rival.
The marriage does not settle anything. Whit has his own reasons for staying in Egypt, and Inez still does not fully trust him even as she moves into his house and his life. An old magic keeps pulling the past into the present. Someone close to Inez is not telling her the truth about what happened to her parents.
The book is set across Alexandria and Cairo in the 1880s. It wears its history openly: British soldiers, foreign archaeologists digging through Egyptian ground, and a legal system that leaves a woman's inheritance in a man's hands. Against that backdrop it plays out as a rivals-to-lovers romance wrapped in historical fantasy, closer to a slow thaw between two guarded people than a fast-moving adventure.
