Synopsis

What the Hell Did I Just Read is the third installment in Jason Pargin's Lovecraftian horror series (published under the pseudonym David Wong), following John Dies at the End and This Book Is Full of Spiders. The novel follows author-protagonist David, his ex-cop best friend John, and their girlfriend Amy as they confront a shape-shifting entity from another dimension that has infiltrated their small Midwestern town. Written with a darkly comic, meta-fictional edge, it blends cosmic horror with satire about the nature of storytelling itself — David narrates in first person, openly aware that he is writing this book for an audience and commenting on how his own prose will land. The tone is irreverent and fast-paced, punctuated by absurd action setpieces involving occult weaponry and a cast of recurring characters from earlier books. Fans of John Dies at the End will recognize the blend of genuine cosmic dread with deadpan humor that has become the series' signature.
