Synopsis

In 1838, the ship Ibis sets sail from Calcutta, bound for Mauritius, carrying indentured laborers. Among its diverse passengers are Deeti, a ruined peasant, and her lover Kuala, who saved her from a pyre. Also aboard is Paulette Lambert, a Frenchwoman disguised as an Indian to escape an arranged marriage, and Jodu, a sailor who is Paulette's foster brother. Their intertwined fates unfold on this voyage across the ocean.
