Synopsis

Set just before the Opium Wars, the old slave ship The Ibis embarks on a tumultuous voyage across the Indian Ocean. Its diverse crew, including a bankrupt raja, a widowed village woman, a mulatto American, and an evangelical opium trader, find their individual lives washing away as they form an unlikely bond, becoming 'jahaj-bhais' or ship-brothers. This historical adventure spans the poppy fields of the Ganges, the high seas, and the back streets of China, bringing to life a panorama of sharply drawn characters.
