Synopsis

The Time Invariance of Snow braids a physics experiment into a Snow Queen retelling. The Devil once made a mirror that showed people twisted versions of themselves, doubling some in stature and virtue and shrinking others into their worst qualities; when a physicist trying to test the symmetry of physical law accidentally shatters it, its shards scatter through reality and seed the world with casual evil. After glimpsing an unaccountable malice in her lover's eyes, the story's narrator travels into the Snow Queen's frozen castle and beyond it into the Devil's own domain, demanding an explanation he can only shrug off as boredom. E. Lily Yu's Tor.com original moves between hard science and fairy tale to ask what accountability looks like across a very long life, closing on a quiet, hard-won reconciliation decades later.
