Synopsis

Clay Jensen comes home one afternoon to find a shoebox of cassette tapes waiting on his doorstep. When he presses play, he hears the voice of Hannah Baker — his classmate and crush, who died by suicide two weeks earlier. On the tapes, Hannah lays out thirteen reasons, and thirteen people, she holds responsible for the despair that led to her death, and she has arranged for the tapes to pass from one named person to the next.

As Clay listens through the night, following Hannah's map across their town, he is forced to confront how small cruelties, rumors, and betrayals accumulated into something unbearable — and to discover why his own name is on her list. Hannah's narration and Clay's present-day reckoning braid together into a single, devastating night.

Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why is a landmark young adult novel about bullying, sexual assault, isolation, and the far-reaching consequences of how we treat one another.
