Synopsis

In 1799, Jacob de Zoet arrives at Dejima, Japan's isolated trading post, hoping to earn enough to marry his fiancée. His plans take an unexpected turn when he meets Orito, a mysterious woman connected to the city's magistrate. As Jacob becomes entangled in the complex social and political landscape, his initial goals blur, leading to a broken promise with far-reaching consequences.
