Synopsis

Dr. Anne Wiley has never lost a patient on the table. She has also never recognized one, until the day a man is wheeled into her operating room and she knows exactly who he is. When his heart stops, she stops working to restart it.

What follows is less a whodunit than a duel. An assistant state attorney is convinced the death was deliberate and builds a case against a surgeon the city admires, while the reasons Anne acted as she did surface slowly and complicate the question of what she owes anyone. Leslie Wolfe writes the two sides in alternating pressure, and the twists come from what each of them is willing to do to win.

A standalone psychological thriller, published in 2023, separate from Wolfe's Kay Sharp, Tess Winnett and Baxter & Holt series.
