Synopsis

The second book in Django Wexler's Shadow Campaigns brings the war home. Fresh from their campaign in the desert, Colonel Janus bet Vhalnich and the soldiers who follow him—dutiful Captain Marcus d'Ivoire and the secret-keeping Winter Ihernglass—return to the capital of Vordan to find the kingdom rotting from within. The king is dying, the treasury is bankrupt, and the ruthless spymaster Duke Orlanko is poised to seize control of the throne and the young princess who sits near it.

As unrest boils over into open revolution in the streets, Janus maneuvers through a deadly court while Marcus and Winter are drawn into plots, mobs, and the hidden war of sorcery running beneath the political one. Princess Raesinia, meanwhile, guards a secret of her own that makes her both more vulnerable and more dangerous than anyone suspects.

Trading desert battlefields for barricades and palace intrigue, The Shadow Throne blends flintlock-era revolution with slow-burning magic and sharp political maneuvering. It deepens the series' cast and stakes, and should be read after The Thousand Names.
