Synopsis

Down on his luck and guiding tourists through southern Africa, the wandering adventurer Anthony Cade accepts a simple-sounding job from an old friend: carry the explosive memoirs of a dead Balkan statesman to a London publisher, and quietly return a packet of compromising letters to a society widow. The errand turns out to be anything but simple. The fictional kingdom of Herzoslovakia has just struck oil, and the British government is maneuvering to restore its monarchy on terms favourable to an oil syndicate. When everyone with a stake in that throne converges on Chimneys, a grand English country house, a guest is shot dead on the night of his arrival, and Superintendent Battle of Scotland Yard arrives to untangle the affair. Around the killing swirl blackmail, mistaken identities, a notorious international jewel thief, and the rumoured whereabouts of a fabulous missing diamond. Cade finds himself drawn deeper into the intrigue alongside the genial Lord Caterham, his sharp-eyed daughter Bundle, and the charming Virginia Revel, all while a watchful French detective and a calculating Foreign Office official pursue their own ends. The story moves briskly between drawing-room comedy and political conspiracy, piling on secret passages, forged papers, and competing schemes. As suspects multiply and motives blur, the question is not only who fired the fatal shot but who, among the assembled players, is truly who they claim to be.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is this the first book to feature Superintendent Battle?

Yes. The Secret of Chimneys marks the debut of Superintendent Battle of Scotland Yard, the stolid, wooden-faced detective who would go on to appear in several more Christie novels.

  • Does Superintendent Battle appear in other Agatha Christie novels?

He does. After this debut, Battle returns in The Seven Dials Mystery, Cards on the Table, Murder Is Easy, and Towards Zero, making this the start of a recurring character.

  • Is there a sequel to The Secret of Chimneys?

Yes. The Seven Dials Mystery (1929) is the sequel and is set at the same country house, bringing back Bundle Brent, Lord Caterham, George Lomax, and Superintendent Battle.

  • What kind of story is it, and what is Herzoslovakia?

It is a light, comic blend of murder mystery and political adventure-thriller. Much of the plot turns on Herzoslovakia, a fictional Balkan kingdom whose newly discovered oil and contested throne draw British and other interests to Chimneys.

  • Was it adapted for television?

Yes. A 2010 episode of ITV's Marple series adapted it, controversially inserting Miss Marple, who does not appear in the original novel. Fans widely criticized the adaptation for departing heavily from Christie's book.

  • Is this part of a series?

It is the first of the loosely connected "Chimneys" books and the first Superintendent Battle novel. It can be read on its own, with The Seven Dials Mystery continuing the setting and several characters.

  • Is it a Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple mystery?

No. Neither Poirot nor Marple appears in the original novel; the investigation is led by Superintendent Battle. Miss Marple was only added by the 2010 television adaptation.

  • When was it first published?

The Secret of Chimneys was first published in 1925, an early entry in Agatha Christie's career.

  • Does this book belong to a series?

This novel is the first of five books featuring Superintendent Battle, a Scotland Yard detective who later appears alongside other famous Christie investigators like Hercule Poirot.

  • Are there any film or television adaptations of this story?

An adaptation was produced as part of the ITV Miss Marple series in 2010, though it significantly alters the plot and includes characters who do not appear in the original novel.
