Synopsis

London in the aftermath of the First World War is full of demobilised soldiers and idle young people with no money and no prospects. Tommy Beresford and Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley, childhood friends who meet again by chance, find themselves in exactly that position, and in a fit of bravado they decide to hire themselves out for any job, however dangerous, under the name "the Young Adventurers." Their advertisement draws them almost at once into something far larger than they imagined. A chance-overheard name, Jane Finn, turns out to belong to a young American woman who vanished years earlier while carrying a secret government treaty entrusted to her aboard a sinking ship. Recruited by a shadowy official, the pair set out to trace Jane Finn and recover the document before it can be used to bring down the British government. Standing against them is a criminal mastermind known only as Mr Brown, whose true identity no one has ever discovered and whose reach extends into the highest circles. With the help of a wealthy American searching for his missing cousin, Tommy and Tuppence follow a trail of false identities, kidnappings and double-crosses through drawing rooms and back streets. Lightly comic in tone yet steadily tense, this early adventure pairs amateur sleuthing with espionage, testing the courage and loyalty of two ordinary people who refuse to be frightened off.

Her dispensing work in a hospital pharmacy during the First World War, repeated again during the Second, gave her the expert knowledge...

Frequently asked questions

  • Is this an Agatha Christie novel, and where does it fall in her career?

Yes. It was first published in 1922 and is Christie's second published novel, following The Mysterious Affair at Styles.

  • Which characters does the book introduce?

It introduces Tommy Beresford and Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley, the husband-and-wife sleuthing pair who would go on to feature in further Christie books.

  • What makes Tommy and Tuppence unusual among Christie's detectives?

They are the only Christie detectives who age roughly in real time, beginning as a young couple in their twenties and appearing as much older characters in books written decades later across her career.

  • How does this book compare to Christie's better-known puzzle mysteries?

It is a light-hearted post-war spy and adventure thriller rather than a classic closed-circle whodunit, closer in tone to a caper than to the Poirot or Marple deduction novels.

  • What is the premise that gets Tommy and Tuppence involved?

Out of money after the war, they advertise themselves as "the Young Adventurers," willing to take any job, which leads them straight into the hunt for a missing woman and a secret treaty.

  • Has the book been adapted for screen?

Yes. Tommy and Tuppence have been adapted in the 1983 ITV series Partners in Crime starring Francesca Annis and James Warwick, and the story was adapted again in the 2015 BBC series Partners in Crime with Jessica Raine and David Walliams.

  • Do I need to read it before the other Tommy and Tuppence books?

It is the first entry in the series, so it is the natural starting point, though each book is largely self-contained.

  • Is the book in the public domain?

Because it was published in 1922, the novel is in the public domain in the United States and widely available as a free ebook.
