Finley O'Sullivan used to be a prosecutor. Now she works as an investigator for a Nashville defence firm, drinking too much and circling the unsolved murder of her husband, which she cannot let go of and cannot solve.

Her new case belongs to Charles Holmes, a man on death row who has decided to take one killing back. He says he did not murder Lance Legard, a fixture of the Nashville music business; he says he cleaned up afterwards, for a girlfriend — Legard's own daughter. Except Legard had identical twin daughters, and the two of them tell Finley entirely different stories about the night their father died, about each other, and about what he did to them.

The first Finley O'Sullivan novel is a legal-investigation thriller built on unreliable witnesses and a protagonist who has to work a family's ugliest secrets while refusing to look at her own.
