Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Eve Knox was found dead in the caves outside Grotto, Iowa, twenty-five years ago. Her best friend Maggie and her sister Nola found the body. There were suspects, including Eve's boyfriend Nick, and no evidence that held. The case went cold.

Maggie Kennedy-O'Keefe is now a detective in Grotto, seven months pregnant, and the case has been reopened on the strength of new evidence. Working it means working her own adolescence, and the people she grew up beside would rather she stopped.

Heather Gudenkauf braids three voices — Maggie now, Nola now, and Eve in the weeks before she died — into a small-town cold case where the distance between what a witness remembers and what a witness says is the whole book.
