Synopsis

Four Chinese immigrant mothers in San Francisco, who formed the Joy Luck Club in 1949, share their life stories with their American-born daughters. These daughters initially dismiss their mothers' advice as irrelevant, but as they face their own life crises, they begin to understand the deep, often painful, connections to their mothers' pasts and inheritances. Amy Tan's novel explores the complex bonds between mothers and daughters, revealing how secrets and histories intertwine across generations.
