Synopsis

Peculiar is a closed Appalachian town with a tidy story about itself: the bad years began the night a teenage party went wrong and the preacher's son fell to his death. Lydia has never believed it. She can trace the rot back further — to a local child who never made it home from school, to an arsonist who set the mountains alight, to the disappearance of her own daughter.

Clara was there on the night of the accident. Now she is back, with a daughter of her own, and her return sets off a fresh run of violence and betrayal in a place that had settled comfortably into silence. When the sheriff calls everyone to the abandoned church where his brother died, the people who have spent years not saying what they know are finally in one room together.

Debbie Herbert writes brooding Southern Gothic suspense — an atmospheric small-town mystery in which the landscape is as unforgiving as the neighbours, and every secret has been kept by more than one person.
