Synopsis

A few months after escaping the depths of Tartarus, demigods Nico di Angelo, son of Hades, and his boyfriend Will Solace, son of Apollo, travel west to Camp Jupiter at the request of Nico's half-sister, Hazel Levesque, daughter of Pluto. Hazel needs help with a situation the boys inadvertently set in motion. By showing the monsters of the Underworld that they do not have to be evil, the demigods inspired a wave of creatures, who now prefer the term mythics, to seek refuge and a peaceful new life at the Roman camp. But the fragile sanctuary is threatened when mythics begin vanishing one by one, often after suffering disturbing dreams. A mysterious dark force is hunting them, intent on punishing every monster for its past crimes. As Nico, Will, and Hazel investigate, ranging across San Francisco landmarks, they uncover a shadowy tribunal bent on judgment and a much larger plot, and they discover that all three of them are personally connected to what is happening. Co-written by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro, this 2025 novel is the direct sequel to The Sun and the Star and the second book of The Nico di Angelo Adventures. It foregrounds identity, change, grief, acceptance, and whether anyone, monster or demigod, can become more than what others believe them to be. The story pairs action-packed momentum with a heartfelt exploration of loneliness, alienation, and second chances.
