Recitatif

Twyla and Roberta meet as eight-year-olds in a shelter for orphaned children. One is Black and one is white, but Toni Morrison never tells us which is which. The story follows their lives through a series of encounters over the next few decades, testing their friendship and their memories of a shared past. This famous short story is a powerful experiment in how race shapes our perceptions.
