Synopsis

John Scalzi's breakout debut reinvents military science fiction with wit, momentum, and a deceptively simple premise. On his seventy-fifth birthday, John Perry does two things: he visits his wife's grave, and he joins the army. In this future, Earth's elderly are the Colonial Defense Forces' most valuable recruits -- because the CDF has a way of making old bodies young again, and it needs soldiers to defend humanity's far-flung colonies against a hostile galaxy teeming with rival species competing for the same scarce worlds.

Perry signs a two-year enlistment knowing he can never return to Earth, trading his failing body for an engineered, enhanced one and his quiet widowerhood for the brutal reality of interstellar war. What he finds is camaraderie among fellow "old farts," a steep and often lethal learning curve, and questions about identity, mortality, and what the Colonial Union is really willing to do to survive.

Fast, funny, and frequently moving, Old Man's War draws openly on the tradition of Heinlein's Starship Troopers while carving out its own voice. A Hugo Award finalist and the launchpad for a beloved six-book saga, it remains one of the most accessible and entertaining entry points into modern science fiction.
