Synopsis

A collection of short stories and personal essays by Louis de Bernières, largely set in the fictional English village of Hambledon during his own childhood in the 1960s and 70s. The title essay is a memoir piece about growing up as an expat child; other stories range from wartime reminiscences to vignettes of local life, all told with wry wit and elegiac warmth.
