Synopsis

Tasked with restoring a dilapidated country estate or facing an arranged marriage, the brilliant but detached Darius Carsington heads to Cheshire looking for a distraction. There he meets Lady Charlotte Hayward, a flawlessly polite woman who has spent years perfecting the art of avoiding matrimony. As Darius tries to uncover the secrets behind her perfect facade, the two find themselves locked in a battle of wits that threatens to dismantle both of their carefully guarded lives.

Loretta Chase, born in 1949, is an American author of historical romance who earned an English degree from Clark University before turning to fiction; she has published under the name Loretta Chase since 1987. Her best-known novel, Lord of Scoundrels (1995), won a RITA Award and is widely regarded as one of the genre's classics. Her other novels include Mr. Impossible, Lord Perfect, and the Carsington and Dressmakers series.
