Synopsis

Los viejos amores is the fourth novel in Rosa Ribas's Detectives Hernández series, following Un asunto demasiado familiar (2019), Los buenos hijos (2021), and Nuestros muertos (2023). Set in the humble, village-like Barcelona neighborhood of Sant Andreu, it follows the family-run detective agency as they take on a new case built around a contemporary crime: an online romance scam preying on an elderly widow who has been neglected by her own children.

Told in third person by an omniscient narrator who moves between the perspectives of victim and investigators alike, the novel uses its case to explore nostalgia, loneliness, and the need to make peace with who we were in order to understand who we are now. Published by Tusquets Editores in March 2025, it was praised by Leonardo Padura for its warm, personal take on the police-procedural form, built from the ordinary stories of ordinary people.
