Synopsis

Homeless and alone after years of roaming the countryside, Lila steps inside a small Iowa church seeking shelter from the rain and finds herself drawn into the life of its widowed minister, John Ames. Rescued as a neglected child by a drifter named Doll and raised hand-to-mouth on the road, Lila struggles to reconcile the hardscrabble family that shaped her with the gentle, settled faith of the husband she comes to marry, and to imagine what kind of mother she might become.
