Klapper

Klapper
Synopsis
Thomas, nicknamed "Klapper" for his cracking joints, has no friends and is painfully aware of his own uncoolness. The novel moves between two timelines, summer 2011 and the present, centering on sixteen-year-old Klapper, who has spent his school break alone at his computer until Bär arrives in his class: large, strong, and completely unbothered by social norms, she is the only person who doesn't treat him like an outsider.
Kurt Prödel's debut traces the friendship, loss, and toxic masculinity that shape growing up caught between online and offline worlds, its texture built from specific, unglamorous details of a certain kind of German teenage life. The novel won the debut prize at lit.COLOGNE 2025 and was nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize 2026.
