Synopsis

Midway through the journey of his life, Dante finds himself lost in a dark wood, unable to find the straight path. Rescued by the shade of the Roman poet Virgil, he is led on a harrowing descent through the nine circles of Hell, where the souls of the damned suffer punishments that mirror the sins they committed in life.

From the lustful swept endlessly by storm winds to traitors frozen in a lake of ice at the very center of the earth, Dante meets the shades of historical figures, mythological monsters, and his own Florentine contemporaries, questioning them as he goes. Guided by reason in the form of Virgil, he journeys ever downward toward the frozen pit where Satan himself is bound.

The first part of Dante's Divine Comedy, the Inferno is one of the supreme achievements of world literature: a vivid, terrifying, and morally exacting vision of divine justice, and the opening movement of the poet's long ascent toward redemption.

About the author

D
Dante Alighieri

Dante was an Italian poet of the Middle Ages. The name Dante is, according to the words of Jacopo Alighieri, a hypocorism for Durante. In contemporary documents it is followed by the patronymic Alagherii or de Alagheriis; it was Boccaccio who popularized the form Alighieri. ([Source][1].)
