Synopsis

A young woman is on a road trip with her new boyfriend, Jake, to meet his parents at their remote family farm — all while turning over a single, insistent thought: she is thinking of ending things. As the visit grows stranger and the drive home strands the couple at a deserted school in a snowstorm, the story slips its moorings, and the line between what is real and what is imagined begins to dissolve.

Told in a spare, claustrophobic first-person voice punctuated by ominous interludes, Iain Reid's debut is a tense, cerebral horror-thriller that builds toward a disorienting, much-debated conclusion.

It is a short, unsettling meditation on loneliness, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves.

Yes. Charlie Kaufman wrote and directed the 2020 Netflix film "I'm Thinking of Ending Things," starring Jessie Buckley and Jesse Plemons, as an adaptation of Iain Reid's 2016 novel. The film reworks several of the book's details, so readers of one should expect a different experience from the other.

  • Did "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" win any awards?

It was a finalist for the 2016 Shirley Jackson Award and a 2017 Barry Award nominee, and became a New York Times bestseller, but it did not win either prize.
