If Something Happens to Me
Five years ago, Ryan Richardson was dragged from a car and beaten while his girlfriend Ali was taken. Neither Ali nor the car was ever found. Suspicion fell on Ryan, and although he was never charged, podcasters and internet trolls kept him at the centre of the story.
He has since changed his surname and started law school, hoping to leave it behind. Then, during a summer trip to Italy with his classmates, his father phones with news: Ali's car has been found underwater in a lake in their hometown. Two dead men are inside, along with an envelope in Ali's handwriting bearing the words If something happens to me.
Soon after, Ryan spots the man who has haunted his dreams since that night. His search for answers carries him through Tuscany, a rural village in the UK and Paris.
The story is a thriller told from several points of view. Alongside Ryan, it follows a young sheriff's deputy in Kansas working her first case and a Philadelphia mobster who has known tragedy of his own. Their paths are set to cross with his. Expect a mystery that moves between continents and keeps its questions open, with a past crime driving every step.
