In a steampunk version of America that lost the Revolutionary War, Charmian "Kit" Kittredge makes her living investigating magic crimes and exposing the frauds behind them. She avoids the nobs of high society where she can, but as the proprietor of Disenchanted & Co. she follows mysteries wherever they lead.

Lady Diana Walsh calls on Kit to dispel the curse she believes is carving hateful words into her flesh as she sleeps. Kit does not believe in magic, but she cannot refuse a woman subjected nightly to such vicious assaults. Investigating the Walsh family, she becomes convinced the attacks are part of a larger and more ominous plot, one that may involve Lady Diana's obnoxious husband.
