Half of a Yellow Sun
Synopsis
Half of a Yellow Sun is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's acclaimed 2006 novel set in Nigeria during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970). The story follows three intertwined lives: Olanna, a wealthy Igbo woman; Odenigbo, her idealistic and radical lover—a mathematics professor at Nsukka University; and Ugwu, a young man from a rural village who becomes Odenigbo's houseboy. As the war breaks out and Biafra declares independence, their comfortable lives are upended by violence, displacement, and betrayal. Adichie uses a non-linear structure to weave together Olanna’s past in Lagos with her present as she flees toward refugee camps; Ugwu’s transformation from an innocent village boy into a hardened survivor; and Odenigbo's unraveling idealism. The novel is a powerful meditation on the impact of war on identity, love, and memory, and it has been widely praised for its rich characterization and unflinching depiction of the Biafran conflict.
