Synopsis

A visiting traveler is invited to observe an execution in a remote penal colony. The officer in charge is devoted to an elaborate apparatus designed by the colony's late Commandant: a machine that carries out sentences by slowly inscribing the condemned prisoner's crime into his flesh over the course of twelve hours, until understanding and death arrive together.

As the officer explains the machine's workings with reverent pride — and reveals that the prisoner has been condemned without trial and does not even know his sentence — the traveler is drawn into a moral confrontation he did not seek. The old order the officer serves is passing, and the story turns on what he will do when he realizes the traveler will not endorse it.

Written in 1914 and published in 1919, In the Penal Colony is one of Kafka's starkest and most disturbing works: a compact meditation on justice, cruelty, and the machinery of authority that faces its subject with a horror stripped of all explanation.
