Yvette Lenoir grew up abandoned on the streets of Paris. She is an untrained witch, one who has never learned to fully control the power she was born with. A wish granted by a jinni breaks her out of prison. That same wish sends her looking for the mother who left her behind, and for the truth locked inside a grimoire that may be all that mother ever left her.
Free but still a fugitive, Yvette turns to Elena Boureanu for help. Elena is the vine witch who won her own reprieve from the authorities in the previous novel. Together they work to decode the grimoire's pages. This Paris answers to the Ministry of Lineages and Licenses, an agency that polices who may practice magic and how. Neither woman can risk being caught working outside its rules.
Someone else wants the grimoire too, and is willing to hurt Yvette to get it. The two witches work through its riddles before he finds them. Along the way they turn up secrets about bloodlines and inherited power. They learn what a witch can become when nobody taught her the rules meant to govern her.
This is the second book in the Vine Witch series, a standalone sequel that does not require the first to follow. Reviewers have called it quick and incident-driven. It is more interested in what happens next than in explaining exactly how its magic works.
