Gilded Hearts

Samuel Hawkins, a Sergeant in the King's Sentry, is investigating a series of murders when his work brings him into contact with the Archivists, an organisation whose members can extract the memories of the dead and see through their eyes. Among them is Piper Smith, the childhood friend he walked away from years earlier.

Piper has grown into a capable archivist performing her first solo extraction, and she has never forgiven Samuel for leaving. As they work the case together their old attraction resurfaces, but the killer, a new incarnation of Jack the Ripper, proves elusive, and the trail suggests he may be working from inside the Archives themselves.

Christine d'Abo's first Shadow Guild novel is a steampunk romance set in an alternate London of memory-capturing machines, political corruption, and a guild whose secrets are as dangerous as the murderer they are hunting.
