Synopsis

غادة كربلاء (The Maiden of Karbala) is a historical novel by Jurji Zaydan, the pioneering Arab writer and journalist, and one of the twenty-two novels in his landmark series Novels of the History of Islam.

Set against the harrowing events surrounding the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE — the confrontation that ended in the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad — the novel dramatizes one of the most consequential episodes in early Islamic history. As armies gather and loyalties fracture across the young Muslim world, Zaydan weaves a story of love, honor, and sacrifice among characters caught in the sweep of great events.

True to Zaydan's method, the book blends carefully researched history with the pull of romance and suspense, written to make the past come alive for a wide readership. A foundational work of modern Arabic historical fiction.
