Synopsis

فتاة القيروان (The Girl of Kairouan) is a historical novel by Jurji Zaydan, part of his series Novels of the History of Islam, set during the rise of the Fatimid Caliphate in North Africa.

The story unfolds in and around Kairouan in present-day Tunisia in the tenth century, as the Fatimid state extends its power and prepares the conquest of Egypt. Zaydan brings to life the ambitions of the caliph al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah and his brilliant general Jawhar al-Siqilli, weaving political maneuvering and military campaigns together with a personal story of love and loyalty amid the upheaval.

As in the rest of the series, Zaydan pairs meticulous historical grounding with the momentum of romance and adventure, aiming to make a formative chapter of Islamic history accessible and engaging. A vivid depiction of a pivotal moment in the medieval Maghreb.
