Juan Goytisolo Gay was a Spanish novelist, essayist and poet, and one of the central figures of the mid-century generation of Spanish writers. Born in Barcelona in 1931 and marked by the death of his mother during the Spanish Civil War, he studied law before leaving for Paris in 1956, where he worked as a literary adviser to the publisher Gallimard; his books were censored in Spain from 1963 onward.
