Synopsis

In the summer of 1976, Carrie Allsop discovers a bundle of letters that reveal her husband is having an affair — and that his lover is married to a man named David Mayer. Rather than confront her husband, Carrie sits down and writes to David, a stranger whose life is about to be upended too.

What begins as a single painful letter becomes an ongoing correspondence between two people bound by the same betrayal — the only ones who truly understand what the other is going through. As the months pass, their letters carry grief, anger, wry humor, and the slow, uncertain work of deciding what comes next.

Told entirely through letters, Taylor Jenkins Reid's short story is a tender, surprising epistolary tale about heartbreak, unexpected connection, and finding your footing after the ground gives way.
