Stephen King

Stephen King (born September 21, 1947) is an American author whose work has defined popular horror fiction for more than half a century. Born in Portland, Maine, he grew up in poverty after his father abandoned the family, and credits his mother's resilience and a voracious reading habit as the foundations of his imagination. He began selling short stories to men's magazines while working as a high school English teacher, and published his first novel, Carrie, in 1974—his wife Tabitha retrieved...

Frequently asked questions

  • How was Dreamcatcher written?

King wrote Dreamcatcher entirely in longhand during his recovery from the van accident that nearly killed him in June 1999. He has described the process as therapeutic—his hand was broken, the writing was physically painful, and the novel became his way of proving to himself he could still work. It was transcribed by his assistant after completion.

  • What is the alien threat in the novel?

An alien species crashes in the Maine woods during a winter storm. They spread a fungal parasite—dubbed 'byrus'—that infects humans and animals. The alien entities (called 'shit-weasels' by characters) gestate inside hosts. The military arrives to contain the outbreak.

  • What is the Jonah and where does it come from?

'The Jonah' is the telepathic ability shared by four friends—Jonesy, Henry, Pete, and Beaver—all of whom befriended a boy named Duddits when they were young. Duddits, who has Down syndrome, shared his psychic gift with the four of them as children. In the novel it becomes central to their ability to resist the alien infection.

  • Is there a connection to It and Derry?

Yes. The town of Derry appears, and Duddits is from Derry. His connection to the four friends echoes the pattern of supernatural bonding King established in It—a vulnerable child whose extraordinary nature creates a bond that persists into adulthood and proves crucial decades later.
