Synopsis

When young Dschaladat discovers his extraordinary talent for the flute, he and his friend are taken by the old Sufi Ishaki Lewzerin into the mountains to learn ancient secrets. As war erupts, the three flutists wander from village to village, eventually finding themselves in a vast, unnamed city where Dschaladat must hide his musical gifts to survive. A mysterious girl named Dalia protects him, revealing her own secrets and guiding him on a journey into the depths of his homeland that defies imagination, in a world where death is ever-present and art offers unexpected salvation.

Bachtyar Ali (Sorani Kurdish: بەختیار عەلی; also transliterated Bakhtiyar or Bakhtyar Ali) is a Kurdish novelist, poet and essayist, born in 1966 in Sulaymaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan. Injured during student protests against Saddam Hussein's government in 1983, he abandoned his geology studies for literature, and published his first poetry collection, Gunah w Karnaval (Sin and Carnival), in 1992.
